Coronavirus and karma

Right now, in the middle of March 2020, the whole world is under attack from the coronavirus. Drastic measures are being taken by governments, and we are all affected by it one way or another. Here in Spain we must stay in our houses and are only allowed to go out if it is to buy provisions.

A lot of people are asking me: what does the coronavirus mean? Why is it here? How have we deserved this? I will endeavour to answer this question based on my understanding of Martinus´ spiritual science.

As a thief in the night

Martinus said before he passed over in 1981 that a major crisis would hit the world at the beginning of the 21st century. This could certainly be this crisis, because he said that it would come as a thief in the night, without any warning. He also said that it would affect the whole world.

Why would such a crisis hit the world? Well, everything that happens is karma. Karma is the return of energies that we have sent out ourselves. When the energies return to their origin, we will be hit by the same actions that we did to others: If we steal, we will be stolen from, if we cheat, we will be cheated, if we were intolerant and racist, sexist, ageist or arrogant, we will be on the receiving end of those attitudes, and if we kill or participate in killing, we will be killed.

But, you may now say: I am good, I treat others with respect and I am kind and helpful, so how can I be hit by dark karma.

Meat is Murder

Here is the thing that is widely overlooked and the reason for a lot of dark karma: the killing and eating of animals.

Most meat eaters do not realize the very dark karma they are sowing for themselves when they participate in killing animals via their eating habits. We all know that we should not kill. We probably heard that in school, and we are familiar with the 5th commandment: “Thou shall not kill.”

For that reason murder is severely punished by our judicial systems and convicted killers will have to spend decades in prison, if they are not executed. So, murder is a serious offence.

However, the 5th commandment does not specify the killing to only pertain to humans. It simply states: Do not kill. This means: do not kill any living being, do not take the life of any other being. And why is that? Because all life forms are sacred. All life forms are here on this planet for a reason, and that reason is to get on with their own evolution, to evolve according to their place in the great scheme of things, and to get as much learning out of their physical life as possible.

Because we were once hunters, and life conditions were hard, we learned to kill and eat animals. In this way, over thousands of lives, we developed a taste for meat. We also somehow got the idea that eating meat was a vital condition for our existence. The idea was developed that we needed the protein in meat to survive. That, if we did not eat meat, we would die. It was either the animal or us.

So, as we evolved, we learned to secure our need for meat without having to go out and hunt for it. We caught the animals before they we born and made sure that they stayed where they were, until they were fat enough for us to kill them. That seemed like a clever arrangement at the time.

This ´clever´ arrangement has reached the level today, where factory farming has become the norm. The animals we like to eat are treated like insensible objects without a right to live, without feelings and intelligence, and totally without respect. The pigs and cows are raped with a rod or the arm of the vet to make them pregnant, and once their babies have been born, they are taken away from their mothers (who, in the case of pigs, are fixated and unable to move) and slaughtered once they are fat enough.

The Law of Karma

Most people do not realize that all their actions have consequences for their own fate. They are not aware of the law of karma that decrees that: we reap as we sow or what we do to others, we eventually do to ourselves.

When a dark fate hits us, we blame others, we blame society, the universe, God, chance or our neighbour. We do not realize that everything that happens to us is a result of our own sowing. Nobody is responsible for our fate other than ourselves. It is never anybody else´s fault. We reap as we sow, and actions sown in one life can come back to affect our fate in a later life.

This means that when we treat the animals like insensitive objects and simply take their lives, then this creates a very dark karma for ourselves. This is how Martinus puts it: An extremely large part of the karma is due to the human beings´ terrible slaughter and bloodbath of millions of animals whose organisms they thus kill and eat”. (The Eternal World Picture, volume 2, page 182). And: “As it is absolutely no vital condition for the human being to eat a diet of meat, but as this, as mentioned, is an absolute violation of the 5th commandment or the cosmic law, the humans will get dark karma for the murder of animals, just as they get dark karma for the murder of human beings”. (The Eternal World Picture, volume 2, page 182).

This is serious business and something that we simply have to realize. It is of paramount importance that we understand this and act accordingly: we must stop eating meat. We must stop this senseless killing of other living beings. We must stop it because it is cruel, heartless, insensitive, mean and selfish. It is NOT a vital condition because we live healthier and longer lives free from illnesses when we eat a plant-based diet. And we MUST STOP because it creates dark karma for ourselves.

A plant-based diet is what is suitable for us at our present level of evolution. Meat is suitable for lions, tigers, crocodiles and hyenas, and to the extent that we stand above those predators in evolution, meat is unsuitable for us as food. Meat is simply too coarse for our digestive system to cope with, and in the long run we undermine our health when we eat meat every day. Plants do not have a developed nervous system and they cannot feel pain. They are easy to digest and therefore provide a perfect diet for us today.

Is the Coronavirus karma from eating meat?

Everything that happens to us is karma. It is the result of actions we have sown ourselves. A lot of the countries where the coronavirus hits are massive meat eaters and meat producers. Without thinking, the populations of China, Italy, Spain and Denmark, for instance, wallow in meat. They love it so much that they feel threatened by vegans and those who advocate a plant-based diet. They think it is their birthright to eat meat with every meal and they get very upset if anybody questions their choice of diet.

Not only does this diet rich in meat create a very dark karma for them, but it also undermines their health, not only in this life but also in their future life. They do not realize the catastrophic consequences that their choice has for their own future: when you participate in killing, you will be killed. In a traffic accident or by a pandemic. In this life or in a future life.

The Anagram

In this amazing universe, there are no coincidences, so look at this:

The coronavirus is a warning to the whole population of the Earth saying: you need to get your act together and treat other living beings with respect.   When you do not, there is a price to pay: you will be confined to your houses or small rooms just like you confined the animals you slaughtered and ate. You will be hit by a potentially lethal illness because you did not respect other living beings. The coronavirus does not respect your life because you did not respect the life of others. The coronavirus is karma.

      Our immune system

If we have a strong immune system, we can fight off the virus fairly easily. The immune system of vegans and vegetarians is much stronger than that of meat eaters. A recent research result showed that the white blood cells of vegans are 8 times more protective against cancer cells than those of people on a Standard American Diet (SAD). .

It is also a scientific fact that people on a plant-based diet are less ill, live longer, healthier lives, have happier thoughts and do not suffer from a whole number of illnesses such as heart disease, lung disease, brain disease, digestive cancers, Alzheimer’s, infections, diabetes, high blood pressure, liver diseases, blood cancers, kidney disease, breast cancer, prostate cancer, suicidal depression and Parkinson´s disease. These diseases are the biggest killers in the Western world and when we change our diet to plant-based and dairy free then we needn´t worry about those diseases anymore.

The Good Effects of Coronavirus

Everybody seems to be aware that we are facing a global crisis. It is a wake-up call and a lot of people seem to be aware of it. They are aware that this crisis can be confronted in a better way, when we stand together and help each other. We can overcome it better when we support and reach out to each other and do what we can to help.

A lot of retired doctors and nurses have offered their assistance to the overworked hospitals, and their helping hands are received with gratitude. Neighbours are offering help with shopping and looking after the children, walking the dog etc. People who would normally just pass each other in the street, now stop to talk and see if they can be of assistance. Our humanitarianism is awakening in the wake of the crisis.

The Metropolitan Opera is offering free opera steaming for us while we are bored and confined to our homes.  https://www.metopera.org/season/radio/free-live-audio-streams/

In Sicily people in quarantine go out onto their balconies to sing to each other, and this tenor sings Nessus Dorma from his balcony in Firenze to an unseen audience:

This poem, written  by a priest, sums it up beautifully:
Lockdown

Yes there is fear.
Yes there is isolation.
Yes there is panic buying.
Yes there is sickness.
Yes there is even death.
But,
They say that in Wuhan after so many years of noise
You can hear the birds again.
They say that after just a few weeks of quiet
The sky is no longer thick with fumes
But blue and grey and clear.
They say that in the streets of Assisi
People are singing to each other
across the empty squares,
keeping their windows open
so that those who are alone
may hear the sounds of family around them.
They say that a hotel in the West of Ireland
Is offering free meals and delivery to the housebound.
Today a young woman I know
is busy spreading fliers with her number
through the neighbourhood
So that the elders may have someone to call on.
Today Churches, Synagogues, Mosques and Temples
are preparing to welcome
and shelter the homeless, the sick, the weary
All over the world people are slowing down and reflecting
All over the world people are looking at their neighbours in a new way
All over the world people are waking up to a new reality
To how big we really are.
To how little control we really have.
To what really matters.
To Love.
So we pray and we remember that
Yes there is fear.
But there does not have to be hate.
Yes there is isolation.
But there does not have to be loneliness.
Yes there is panic buying.
But there does not have to be meanness.
Yes there is sickness.
But there does not have to be disease of the soul
Yes there is even death.
But there can always be a rebirth of love.
Wake to the choices you make as to how to live now.
Today, breathe.
Listen, behind the factory noises of your panic
The birds are singing again
The sky is clearing,
Spring is coming,
And we are always encompassed by Love.
Open the windows of your soul
And though you may not be able
to touch across the empty square,
Sing.

Fr. Richard Hendrick, OFM

It is all so very heart warming and shows that we are, after all, also caring, compassionate humans on our way towards a better world.

Maria McMahon and I have just published a book about how the law of karma works, and we hope you will read it, because it reveals so many unknown aspects about fate and karma:
