Why Can’t I Remember My Past Lives?

One of the most common objections to reincarnation is this: If I have lived before, why can’t I remember?

Let us offer a clear and meaningful answer to this question.

Children Who Remember

To begin with, it is not true that no one remembers. Many children do remember their past lives.

Over a period of more than fifty years, Ian Stevenson from the University of Virginia documented around 3,000 cases of children who recalled previous lives as identifiable individuals. His work, continued by Jim Tucker, shows consistent patterns that are difficult to dismiss. In 2021 Jim Tucker published the book “Before – Children’s Memories of Previous Lives”. The book is the result of research over many years and it is full of fascinating reports of past life memories.

In many of these cases, the previous life ended violently. The child, once able to speak, begins—often around the age of three—to describe events, people, and circumstances from that life. These are not vague impressions, but concrete details that can often be verified.

One well-known example is the case of Ashok Kumar / Ravi Shankar. Ashok Kumar, a young boy, was murdered when his throat was cut by two men with a razor knife. Some years later, Ravi Shankar was born nearby. As soon as he could speak, he claimed to be Ashok. He described the murder in detail and even identified the killers. He also bore a birthmark across his neck, closely resembling the fatal wound.

Cases like this show us that memory can pass from one life to the next.

And yet, these memories rarely last. As the child grows, they fade—usually disappearing by the age of six when the child settles into its new life.

The Hidden Memories

So where do these memories go?

They are not lost. They simply move out of our day-conscious awareness.

Through hypnosis and regression therapy, many people have accessed memories from previous lives. In doing so, they often relive experiences with remarkable clarity—sometimes releasing deep-seated fears and traumas or physical pains in the process. Regression therapy has become a very efficient way to overcome deep-seated traumas. This tells us something important: our past lives are still within us. The information is just not always accessible to our waking mind.

Why We Do Not Remember

According to Martinus, there is wisdom in this forgetting.

Each life we live has its own purpose. We return not to relive the past, but to continue our development. There are lessons to learn, imbalances to correct, and qualities to cultivate.

If we carried full, conscious memories of many past lives, it would not be a gift—it would be a burden. Imagine remembering every loss, every mistake, every trauma, every relationship. It would cloud our judgment and make it difficult to focus on the life in front of us.

And with countless lives behind us, which ones should we remember?

Forgetting allows us to begin again—without being overwhelmed—while still carrying forward and focusing on what truly matters.

We Carry Everything with Us

Because although we do not actively remember our past lives as stories, we carry them with us in the shape of the person we have become.

Everything we have experienced is stored in the deeper layers of our consciousness. It shapes who we are—our reactions, our talents, our fears, our compassion, our sense of right and wrong.

In that sense, we are not separate from our past lives. We are the result of them.

When you meet a person who radiates kindness, patience, and understanding, you are seeing the outcome of many lived experiences—often including suffering that has been transformed into empathy. When you meet someone filled with anger, intolerance, or indifference, you are seeing a being earlier in that same journey.

We are all moving along the same path—slowly, steadily—toward becoming fully humane beings who can only express love.

Our talents

Another real indicator of what we did in former lives is having a look at what talents, abilities and preferences we have in this life. The mainstream narrative tells us that we inherit our talents from our parents, but most people have talents that none of their parents have. Science is eerily silent about this. But Martinus tells us that we cannot simply inherit talents and abilities via the genes. All the talents we have are the result of practice in former lives and they are not gene-based but are stored in the energy field or aura of our consciousness. This field is who we really are, we are not the body. That is why some children can exhibit extraordinary talents for playing a musical instrument. But we are not only talking about spectacular and extraordinary talents for music but also about more common talents like cooking, baking, sewing, building, gardening, driving, dancing, painting, writing, learning math and languages, empathy, compassion, organizing, leading etc. Everything we have done many times in our previous lives generates talents that we take with us into our next incarnation. So, instead of complaining about the missing memories, we can simply look at what we are good at today. And this will give us a superb indication of what we did in former lives. Our talents are a kind of memory bank for our past-life activities and when we discover our hidden talents, it is like a greeting from the past that we do not actively remember, but which is a treasured part of who we are today.

The Real Perspective

So the question is not really: Why can’t I remember my past lives?

The real question is: What have my past lives made me into?

Because nothing has been lost.

Every experience, every joy, every pain, every lesson—it is all within you now, forming the foundation of who you are. Your conscience, your insight, your ability to love—these are the true memories of your past.

You do not need to remember your past lives.

You are living their result.
