In this article we are going to look at the enormous power of our own will. As we go about our daily business, we are probably not aware of the powerful tool that has been placed in our hands in the shape of our will. We can perform miracles with our will; all we have to do is wake up to the fact that our life and happiness depend on how we use our will. With the power of our will we can heal our body, we can generate harmony around us, we can create wonderful loving relationships, when we decide to do so and apply the force of our will to the desired task. This is not wishful thinking but the mere realization of the strength of our will. Many people go through life without using this, the greatest God-given gift.
The power of our will
according to Martinus – abridged and edited version of his article “Viljekraften”
Introduction
Martinus describes the power of our will as a divine ability in human beings – a creative energy that connects mind, body and spirit. Through conscious will, we can influence both our health and our relationship with the world around us. Our will thus becomes the key to creating good health and harmony between human beings and with nature.
- The materialistic human being as a cosmic corpse
Every human being inevitably finds herself in the middle of her own destiny – it is her relationship to life, nature and herself that shapes her current existence. Destiny ranges from the highest happiness to the deepest suffering, and for most people today, life is characterized by struggle and ignorance. Modern, materialistic consciousness does not yet understand life itself. It believes that man is merely a random product of natural forces without any higher meaning. In this ignorance, man actually lives in the realm of death – not because he is physically dead, but because he is spiritually dead, a cosmic corpse, separated from the experience of eternal life that flows behind everything.
- Death as a transition of consciousness
There is no such thing as absolute death. What we call death is only the separation of our consciousness / soul from a worn-out body. The soul continues its journey in new forms, just as day follows night and summer follows winter. Earthly humans believe in death because they still only perceive the physical world and cannot see the psychic, energy reality that continues beyond the body. They firmly believe that they are identical to the physical body and that no part of their being survives death. This is the greatest misunderstanding of this time and age.
- Something cannot become nothing
Nothing in the universe can disappear – neither matter nor life. Something can be transformed, but it cannot cease to exist. Therefore, life is also eternal.
We have always been living beings and will continue to be so for all eternity. The forms of life simply change, just as ice melts into water and turns into steam – but it is still the same substance, just in a different state.
- Life and the body
Life is not identical to the body. The organism is only a tool, a receiving and transmitting device for consciousness. Just as radio waves exist independently of the receiver, the consciousness /soul exists independently of the body. When the body perishes, consciousness does not cease – only its ability to express itself on the physical plane ceases.
- The invisible world of thoughts
Behind the body lies a living, energy world of thoughts, feelings and will. These cannot be seen, but they are real. Thoughts exist as rays or waves of energy that can affect both ourselves and others. Our consciousness is therefore already alive beyond the physical. The spiritual world is the primary world, and it controls and shapes the material world.
- Consciousness is primary
The body is secondary; consciousness is primary. When the body dies, consciousness continues undisturbed, only without physical contact. Our thoughts, feelings, memory and will continue to exist – for they have never been physical. It is only the connection to the physical plane that is temporarily interrupted.
- The psychic being as a power center
Human beings are, in their innermost nature, psychic beings – living power centers that send and receive energy. It is this interaction with nature and other beings that constitutes life. Through the body, consciousness carries out its volitional actions: we move, speak and act, all through psychic forces that influence matter.
- The will – the gateway to the forces of life
When we lift an arm or speak a word, it is done by the power of our will. We activate energies that create movement and expression. The will is like a ray that can control both the body and the mind. Our body obeys our will. We can choose to shut out destructive forces and open up to life-giving ones. The will is therefore the key to our inner power and wellbeing.
- Loving thoughts as a healing force
Since the will can direct energy through the body, it can also direct love. Just as we can send loving words and touches to others, we can send loving thoughts to ourselves – to our organs and cells. Loving thoughts are life-giving. They strengthen, uplift and heal. A person who trains herself to think lovingly and positively can become her own greatest healer. Medicine and treatment help the body, but healing is only complete when the mind cooperates through love and will.
- Living in harmony with nature
Physical health is not enough if the mind is filled with bitterness and strife. The loving force must also unfold in our relationship with others and with nature, which is our true mother and father. Humans should not reshape nature according to their will but learn to live in harmony with it. Through experience and mistakes, we develop wisdom, and with wisdom comes the ability to use our will correctly – in harmony with the laws of life. To understand another human being is to recognize that it is exactly what it can be at this moment. At any given moment we are all standing at the height of our development. Everything is in transformation, and in this eternal transformation, the loving will of life unfolds.
Conclusion
When we learn to use our will as a tool for love, we can shape our own destiny for the better. Every thought, every feeling and every action is part of life’s great cycle. Our will unites us with the divine principle that carries everything – and through it we discover that life has never been dead, but is the eternal, living spirit that Martinus calls God’s will in us.
